Wine and Young Women...A Dangerous Trend?

Women are being targeted in a big way to purchase wine and it's working...especially with young moms. Wine is being paired with so many events that attract women, like yoga classes, paint parties and mani-pedis. It's being used to self medicate. Women are feeling entitled to a glass, or several, of wine because life is hard. Or motherhood is hard. Or it's socially encouraged. And it's been glamorized by social media.

The marketers are clever, giving the wine names like "Girls' Night Out" or "Mom Juice". There are wine festivals targeting women and memes like this one all over social media making jokes about consuming large quantities of wine. It's no wonder that alcoholism among women is a growing problem. Men still consume more alcohol than women but women are gaining on them.

Since the mid 1990s there has been a concerted effort to entice women to drink more with the introduction of beverages like wine coolers and hard lemonade. These drinks are referred to as "alcopop" or "cocktails with training wheels".

Specifically, wine is being marketed to mothers and there may be collateral damage in this effort. Kids see their mothers drinking wine and hear the marketing messages alluding to the need for moms to drink to deal with their kids and they see that their parent can't deal with life or them without being drunk. What does that tell a child about the way their mother feels about them? And what message about life does the child receive? In order to deal with it, you need to drink. What could possibly go wrong in that scenario???

Nightly drinking is increasing among women but that isn't the only troubling behavior on the rise. What used to be a behavior mostly exhibited by men, is now becoming more commonplace among women. That behavior is binge drinking. People who save up their drinking for the weekend may drink as much in one sitting that they may have consumed over several days. Some do it for sport, some do it to decompress, to numb the stress they feel. It may help to numb the feeling short term but in the long term, alcohol consumption contributes to depression. Binge drinking can lead to other long term health issues like cancer or stroke. Women seem to be more at risk because we usually weigh less than men, have a higher percentage of body fat and smaller livers.

The bottom line is that over-consuming alcohol, be it wine, beer or spirits is never a good idea. And by over-consuming, I mean more than ten drinks per week and more than two drinks per day. The long and short term problems associated with over-consumption of alcohol just are not worth it.

If you think you would have trouble giving up alcohol for a period of time, it might be time to talk to your doctor about it. Don't wait until it has a permanent negative impact on your life.
