Flouride...Is It Safe?

Of course we've all been told that we need fluoride for our teeth. It's in our water and in our toothpaste. As kids we likely were given fluoride treatments by the dentist and if you had a well at home, probably were prescribed fluoride tablets to take as a dietary supplement because it wasn't in your water.

In the 1930s, scientists determined that dental issues were lower in areas where there was a high fluoride level in the water supply. So in 1945, the US began adding fluoride to the public water supply by recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO).

While it's certainly true that fluoride helps to decrease the incidence of tooth decay, there is growing concern about fluoride toxicity. Some countries are even banning the fluoridation of water. According to this article, only a handful of European countries continue to add fluoride to their water supply, while 97% of Europe and most developed countries, including Japan do not. There are parts of Asia and Africa that actually defluoridate the water because of the high concentration of naturally occurring fluoride in the water supply.

Here's a scary thing...a new study just revealed that exposure to fluoride during pregnancy causes the baby to have a lower IQ. Fluoride infiltrates the placenta and gets into the brain of the fetus where it collects in the area responsible for learning and memory. It also impacts the central nervous system and for every 1mg of fluoride intake by a pregnant mother, the decrease in IQ points is 3.7-6.3 points.  According to the study, the level of exposure was at what is considered optimal levels. That is pretty significant.

But fluoride isn't all that great for teeth either. Excess fluoride exposure during the time of tooth development can cause fluorosis or mottling of the teeth. In 2012, it was determined that 68% of adolescents in the US had some level of fluorosis of the enamel. This was particularly evident in areas where fluoridation occurs.

There is little risk associated with low fluoride intake. The only known risk is that of dental caries or tooth decay. Both the problem of overexposure and underexposure can be resolved by topical application of fluoride to the teeth rather than internal consumption.

Maybe we should consider NOT fluoridating our water supply as so much of the world has already done. Eating a healthy nutritious high quality diet with few or no refined carbohydrates, proper dental hygiene and an overall healthy lifestyle will support your optimal dental health without having to consume water that adds to your toxic overload with fluoride.

I have a well, I don't use a fluoride supplement. I also don't consume refined carbs, processed sugar or other foods that promote tooth decay and I thoroughly brush my teeth twice a day. I haven't had a cavity in decades. So I ask you...do we really need to put fluoride in our public water supply? I think not.
